A 60 mg solar-powered radio tag can be attached to individual migrating monarchs. Researchers tagged 400 monarchs; two of them, JMU004 and MW 026 were released on September 23 and 27, respectively. Both reached the Monarch Reserve in Mexico on November 9, 2025. Cheryl Schultz of Washington State University has documented a 22% drop in butterfly abundance in North America over the last 20 years.
