Let's iron out how to sign up and take honors courses at SAU
Full Honors Courses
- Full honors courses only enroll honors students, are smaller, and are taught differently.
- Most such courses are General Education courses and will substitute in the General Education curriculum for non-honors equivalents.
- From time to time, upper-division full honors courses will be offered as well.
- In the past, the following full honors courses were regularly offered: World Lit, General Psychology, US History, Philosophy, and others on occasion.
- In Fall 2023 Ancient Egypt was offered as a full honors course.
- At least two more will be offered in the Spring of 2024. HOWEVER, those courses must enroll at least 8 students apiece in order to be offered.
Honors Arkansas Courses
- Honors Arkansas offers online honors courses regularly. SAU students may enroll in those courses by using Advanced Topics in Honors courses. Students may take up to six hours of honors credit using those two courses.
- Here is their list of previous courses:
- Pandemic (2020)
- Disent/Protest (2021)
- Bioethics (2022)
- Privacy (2023)
- Arkansas Voting Rights (2024)
Contract Honors Courses
The majority of honors courses are called contract honors courses because honors students will register for a regular course and then contract with the instructor to elevate the course to honors. The process is described here:
- Student asks to determine if instructor will teach an honors section.
- If instructor declines you must take the course as non honors or select another course
- Student obtains contract from Honors College office (either hard or electronic copy, electronic is preferred).
- CLICK HERE to see a blank contract (it is a Word docx)
- Student and instructor discuss how to elevate the course to honors level.
- Remember a contract must satisfy both parties
- Simply adding a research paper should be avoided. Projects that are interesting and engaging are best.
- If the instructor is new to Honors College you may ask the instructor to consult with me
- Contracts for upcoming semesters must be finalized by the last day of class the previous semester.
- PLEASE it makes our life much easier
- We will grant reasonable exceptions
- For example a new instructor
- The contract is turned in to the Honors Office.
- Contact director, assistant director, or administrative assistant for help in creating a contract if needed
- Note, failure to complete the contract may result in the instructor lowering the grade by one letter.
POISE
- POISE is SAU's registration management system. It sits in the background and must be accessed via an account and password.
- When you access MY SAU you are really accessing a front end application of POISE
- When I register you for classes POISE expects me to input a short ID
- POISE DEMO (if class PC supports SkyLite program, that is)
- POISE will be replaced soon by Jenzabar (1 to 2 years)
The Short ID
- Every SAU class is coded with a short ID
- The first four numbers code for the class itself
- The second four numbers code for the semester that class is being offered
- So 1979232S yields
- PSYC 3153
- Section 1
- Spring 2024
- For the 2023-2024 academic year:
- 231S = Fall 2023
- 232S = Spring 2024
- 233S = Summer I 2024
- 234S = Summer II 2024
- 231T = Winter Intersession 2023
- 232T = Spring Intersession 2024
- General
- Every course must have its own unique Short ID
- This is basic database practice
- So, an honors contract course will have its own Short ID and a different section number from the nonhonors course

In the example above, the number Honors College will need from you is: 1979. That is the SHORTID. You will bring us a SHORTID for each course in which you wish to enroll. Every course has its own SHORTID; the last four characters indicate the semester and year
232SS designates Spring 2024 semester, FYI
When you send me your Spring 2024 schedule send me the SHORTIDs. If you don't I'll e-mail you back and your registration will be delayed until you do so. ALSO SEND: course name, course number, days, times.
