NCHC 2009 Trip Report
Modified: 2009-11-01
The Hotel
Pictures from the Meeting
- This session was a disaster, two groups talking about two different topics in same room
- Here's the hotel's theatre meeting room. It was an impressive room
- One of the NCHC Journal Editors
(Ada Long)
- New Honors Directors Reunion
Interesting Thoughts
- These are some of the marginal notes I wrote to myself :
- Interesting looking book: Lubrano, Alfred (2003). Limbo: Blue-collar roots, white-collar dreams. New York: Wiley.
- NCHC is looking for research on honors, especially longitudinal research using statistical methods
- Many honors courses are interdisciplinary; we should add some
- Students are hard liners when it comes to honors administrative decisions
- Concurrent enrollment is an external threat to honors
- Many honors programs are large, SAU's advantage may be being up close and personal
- SAU Honors College should check to see which departments do not have "shell" courses (e.g., Advanced Topics)
- Another book: Hacker, Diana (2009) Pocket style manual, New York: Bedford/St. Martins.
- Why does everybody say lectures are boring? I'd like to see research on that. Some lectures are spellbinding.
- Use Eyes on the Prize to introduce diversity
- Campus as text seems like a good idea
- Need to get more information about Goldwater, Truman, Rhodes, and other competitive scholarships. See NAFA
Specifics
- From: Reimagining the Honors Address on the WWW
- Speaker cancelled!
- So, I suggested audience take over the session
- We did and analyzed (mostly bad) Web pages
- We also looked at speaker's Web page
- (We will be unveiling our new Web page soon)
- From: Small College Honors Programs
- Where to put the honors lounge and office?
- Honors should be "good citizen" on campus.
- From: Care and Maintenance of Honors Faculty
- Some things are easy to provide: food, support, acknowledgement, tenure file materials, and exciting teaching opportunities
- Other things are harder to provide: release time, money
- From: Advising in Honors
- Early registration is a HUGE advantage for honors students
- Honors needs to work WITH regular academic advisors
- Create appeals process for those close to requirements (faculty/student membership)
- From: Protecting Honors from External Demands
- Honors must work with other departments
- All honors students have "dual citizenship" (honors and major department)
- From: Fund Raising in Honors
- Larry Andrews was there (author of new monograph: Fund Rai$ing in Honor$)
- He said having an unrestricted fund was a good thing to have
- Unrestricted funds generally come from smaller alumni donations
- Parents will contribute funds towards student activity funds
- Cultivate young graduates. One way is to ask for $10 the first year, $20 for the second year, and so on...
