Getting Down to Business

• Teaching Online
  • I would much rather be teaching this course face-to-face
  • COVID put an end to those plans
  • Also, I had planned on retiring in a few years never having taught an online class
  • I had never used BlackBoard either, until last year
  • Now, I'm actually OK with being online but I miss seeing your faces three hours a week
  • Something new has been meeting students from this class face-to-face AFTER the course is over in public places
• Teaching with Technology
  • I have taught with technology for a long time (mid 1990s)
    • Blackboards->Whiteboards->Overhead Projectors->LCD Panels->Projectors
    • Chalk->Erasable Markers->Acetates->HyperCard->Web pages
      • In fact, I taught general psychology in a kind of online way back in the 1990s before the internet existed
        • BTW, I'm an Apple and Mac guy. I used Apple II+ computers and then switched to Macs a LONG time ago:-)
• Fall 2023 Courses
  • I'm teaching PSYC 2003 (General Psychology, this class), PSYC 3093 (Physiological and Comparative Psychology) , HC 1013 three (Honors Seminars) , and one Freshman Seminar. I'm a busy guy
  • Both classes have their own web pages
    • I view those web pages and the one for this course as substitutes for my in person lectures
      • The pages are long
      • Contain lots of information
      • Feature video and audio files
  • Two classes include textbooks: PSYC 2003 (this class) and PSYC 4043
  • General Psychology page also includes online access to PowerPoints with added audio (by me)
• Testing
  • ALL classes will take OPEN BOOK/OPEN NOTES tests
  • Tests must be turned in by the last week of class
    • But DO NOT PUT THEM OFF!
  • When you take all of the tests in the course you are done
    • Meaning you may finish the courses early
  • General Psychology students and Cognitive Science students take 5 tests (and may drop one)
  • History of Psychology students take 7 tests (and may drop one)
  • More details on testing may be found on each course's web page
• Grading
  • Expect the grading criteria to be more strict because of the open book/open note test format
    • Meaning, if you want an A the criterion will be 92% or above
    • That means that on a 50 point test you may only miss four points to earn an A
  • In all courses, each test has the same value
  • There are no quizzes
  • There are no extra credit assignments
  • All grading data will be posted on BlackBoard
• Communication
  • I will send you many e-mails from my SAU account and from BlackBoard
  • You must keep up with those communications
  • I expect you to ask me questions using e-mail
  • I will be available beginning at 8 am and unavailable after 8:00 pm during the week
  • You may contact me during the weekends but do not expect me to respond promptly
• Other
  • I plan to offer you high quality courses in psychology in a manner similar to how I would have done so in class
  • I expect you to:
    • Keep up with your work
    • Read your e-mail
    • Communicate with me promptly about problems and other issues
